Thank you. I do have to admit, that being here has been like having a break from everything that I returned home to, even with what's been happening. Being here is a lot refreshing, and I'm glad I've met you and Rin and others as well.

[ It's a good thing D.Va thrives when there's danger, then. Though it's fair to say that her confidence to handle whatever comes her way has been...somewhat lost after that nightmare. Still, she can't say that, can she? ]

[and shiro will arrive at the kitchen as prompted, not delaying as to not keep d.va waiting. he's curious as to why she wanted to meet him, but he's used to younger cadets wanting to talk to him at crazy hours of the day.]

[ She's there a little before him, but he's prompt and punctual just as she'd anticipated. In her hand is a plastic container, filled with what appears to be chips? ]

Alright, I don't know if you'd eat these, but they're one of my prized possessions: apple flavored chips. Peter made these for me, but I have a lot back in our room.

[ A brief moment, then: ] I haven't had anyone worry about me like that in ages. So...thanks, Shiro.

[oh. a surprising gift.]

[shiro takes the container into his hands and turns it around, as d.va explains what they are. he lowers it when she continues to explain the real reason she's given them to him--and his smile resurfaces.]

I'll give them a try. Sounds like an interesting snack.

[and now his expression grows softer]

You don't need to thank me. As I said, I got your back. [pause] I'm glad you look like you're feeling much better.

Yup! I'm impressed Peter was able to make something like this! They're really healthy and pretty tasty.

[ She really couldn't think of anything better to give him. That cane thing she was joking about is going to be for Christmas (speaking of which, she needs to ask Shiro to collaborate on something for Rin), so this was the next best thing. ]

I dunno, I guess talking it out really helped a lot. I'm not really open about things like that in general.

[ A pause. ] Shiro, can you promise not to tell anyone about what I said? I don't want...people thinking I'm a sap. I'm better than this.

What did you say?

[a light question, coming up to be--yes, the obvious joke everyone always uses to feign ignorance to help concede a promise that they won't say anything about it.]

Don't worry. I wouldn't tell anyone anything other than how brave and skilled you are if they asked.

[he puts his hand on her shoulder--a familiar, warm touch, and smiles]

You should try sleeping and using the Song this time, though. I wouldn't want you to go through that again.

[ She's really glad that he's going to keep it a secret, and she sort of expected him to; but what she didn't foresee is how honest he is about thinking she's brave and skilled and capable. He's the first person on base to acknowledge it, and for a second, she doesn't know how to react, especially when he puts his hand on her shoulder. ]

...Yeah. I will. It was stupid of me to have forgotten.

It happens, even to the best of us.

[he knows about fuck ups, so he's not going to blame anyone for being inattentive one time. thankfully for d.va, this didn't result in something worse than emotional pain which was--thankfully--recovered from quickly.]

I'm sure you won't forget anymore.

[hand back to himself now]

[ She really meant it when she said she can't remember the last time anyone was this concerned about her. Thing is, she doesn't like it when people are worried about her, because she's supposed to be strong and confident and indestructible. And she is (two of those things), but she is human, and this serves as a reminder. ]

I definitely won't! Those nightmares aren't getting the best of me ever again.

[ Probably. She's got her usual bravado back when she says it, but then she becomes solemn: ]

You don't deserve any of what happened to you, Shiro. Not gonna lie, when I heard about it, I was pretty pissed off for you. I know you don't wanna talk about it, but--it just makes me so mad! [ huffs ] Bad things shouldn't happen to good people.

[briefly, there's a sadness that settles on the way he looks at her; she's definitely angry on his behalf, and he's not wanted to burden anyone with his own miseries. it's heartwarming, but he wishes she wouldn't have to grow so concerned about it.]

What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

[unwavering strength, even if his words tend to condemn more than necessary.]

--and bad things still happen. It's how we move forward from that point what defines what makes or breaks us.

But I do get what you mean. I wish you knew how much I appreciate your words, D.va.

[ Somehow, in the face of everything that's happened, Shiro still manages to stay strong. And D.Va doesn't see it as a burden at all; rather, she's pretty honored he shared something like that with her. And as she said before, she's got his back, just like he has hers. ]

And I appreciate yours, too! Being a hero's a lot tougher than people think, so we gotta stick together. I mean...you know I have your back, too, right?
